Rising along the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Rwenzori Mountains — also known as the Mountains of the Moon — form one of Uganda's most dramatic coffee landscapes. Within this range lies Kasese, a district whose high-altitude communities cultivate exceptional Arabica in fertile volcanic soils and cool, misty microclimates. Coffee has become one of the most economically significant crops in the region, grown across nearly all sub-counties and providing vital income for rural households. The area's elevation — exceeding 1,200 meters above sea level — combined with cooler temperatures and abundant rainfall, creates ideal conditions for slow-maturing Arabica distinguished by pronounced sweetness and complexity. The region has further benefited from new development initiatives, including a Geographical Indication program centered in Kasese, which serves to formalize quality standards, traceability, and regional value, thereby strengthening the reputation of Rwenzori coffee on the global stage.

Historically, Rwenzori coffee suffered from inconsistent processing, and the region became associated with "drugars," or dried Arabicas of often inferior quality. However, the establishment of new receiving stations across the Rwenzoris — including those in Bugoye and Kisinga — has dramatically improved both cherry collection efficiency and overall quality. These advancements have enabled farmers to command higher premiums and have brought Rwenzori natural coffees into considerable prominence for their fruit-forward profiles and clean, consistent cup quality.

Following selective picking, fresh cherries are delivered to Kyagalanyi's washing station, where they undergo traditional natural processing. Whole cherries are sun-dried on raised beds to preserve fruit flavors, with regular turning employed to encourage even drying, enhance airflow, and prevent over-fermentation. An extended drying period further develops the coffee's rich, fruity character, emphasizing berry sweetness, deep chocolate, and wine-like aromatics. This natural processing methodology at high altitudes imparts the Rwenzori lot's signature smooth, aromatic profile while honoring the region's longstanding agricultural traditions.

We recommend letting the bag rest, unopened, for 5-7 days after roast date to give the beans time to offgas and develop the best flavor.
